New NASCAR Qualifying Rules
NASCAR has revamped its Qualifying process for the 2005 Nextel Cup Series, eliminating the "provisionals" system.
Under the new rules, the top 35 drivers in the points standings are guaranteed a spot in the race. The next 7 slots go to the drivers not in the top 35 who have the fastest qualifying speed. The 43rd slot will continue to be reserved for a current or former Cup champion.
For the first 5 races of 2005, the top 35 are based on 2004 Nextel Cup points.
